21ST CENTURY CHOREOGRAPHERS IV

4.7

Witness the glorious debut of Jamar Roberts virtuosic brainchild at the New York City Ballet! He is joined by Justin Peck, featuring his all-new ballet, which is performed to music composed by Nico Muhly. Christopher Wheeldon presents This Bitter Earth, his lyrical pas de deux, which is set to a remix of Dinah Washington’s song. This terrific program also features Edwaard Liang’s latest ballet.

Why You Should Watch 21st Century Choreographers IV

A dance duet choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, This Bitter Earth is from Five Movements, Three Repeats. The complete piece was first created for Fang-Yi Sheu & Artists, a dance group led by Fang-Yi Sheu, the star from the Martha Graham Dance Company. It also included dancers like Wendy Whelan, Craig Hall, and Tyler Angle from the New York City Ballet. It is set to an evocative and uplifting score the permeates the entire hall. This Bitter Earth had its Company premiere in 2012 at the Fall Gala by the New York City Ballet.

Justin Peck is the resident choreographer of the New York City Ballet and is also the Artistic Advisor. New Peck is his latest production that is featuring, for the first time ever, at the David H. Koch Theatre. This will also be the first time Justin Peck and American composer Muhly have worked together to fabricate a piece replete with emotion.

The Show

New Liang (Davis)

Edwaard Liang, a former soloist for the New York City Ballet, presently the Artistic Director at BalletMet in Ohio, is back with his first creation for the Company. His spellbinding choreography is set to feature at the Fall Fashion Gala in 2019. It is performed to a melodious score by the composer Oliver Davis.

This Bitter Earth

This is a ballet show that is filled to the brim with a mesmerising and poetically choreographed dance. It features a dance for a couple that explores poignant and hazy melodies which are set to a version of This Bitter Earth originally by Dinah Washington, remixed by Max Richter.

New Peck (Muhly)

Justin Peck has choreographed one of the most exquisite dance performances for his latest ballet show. Clubbed with music that is composed by renowned American composer Nico Muhly, the show is hoisted to an all-new level of sophistication and elegance. The music is fantastic and suits the choreography perfectly.

New Roberts

Jamar Roberts from the Alvin Alley American Dance Theatre debuts with his first creative work for the New York City Ballet in 2020. Jamar’s choreography has been critically acclaimed by the New York Times and was considered adroit and emotional. His ballet show is the highlight at the annual spring gala by the Company.
